Geographic Harbor is located on the Alaska Peninsula, about 430 km SW of Anchorage. The harbour is at the head of Amalalik Bay, about 10 km inland from Shelikof Strait. About 40 km to the SE of the strait is Kodiak Island. Geographic Harbor is set in the beautiful region of Katmai National Park. It is known for its Alaskan brown bears. Geographic Harbor has a very high population of bears year-round, due to the availability of clams and edible coastal sedge at low tide, as well as salmon and other fish. Bears in Katmai Park are uniquely unafraid of and uninterested in humans, and will allow people to approach (and photograph) much more closely than bears elsewhere.

Viewing brown bears up close is the attraction here, seeing their different methods of catching fish, and observing their family life with their cubs. Geographic Harbor provides unique opportunities for photographers, naturalists and nature enthusiasts of all experience levels. Other mammals that inhabit Katmai include snowshoe hare, moose, wolf, coyote, beaver, Canadian lynx, wolverine, river otter, mink, red fox, weasel, porcupine, and marten. Marine mammals include the harbor seal, sea lion, sea otter, beluga whale, killer whale and gray whale. Caribou are occasionally within the park during winter seasons.

The spectacular eruption of Novarupta in 1912 brought scientists and researchers to this area, and in 1919 Geographic Harbor was discovered by the Geographic Society, hence its name. The park includes as many as 18 individual volcanoes, seven of which have been active since 1900. The 2000m Mt Katmai is visible 28 km to the NW from Geographic Harbour.
