Thank you Gayle, for all your help. We really liked the cabin you suggested to us on Aloha deck, and we found the layout very roomy and comfortable."

Attu Island, known for its cloudy, rainy, foggy and windy weather, is the westernmost piece of USA’s territory. It is the largest of the Aleutian islands, and actually lies 560 km closer to Japan than to its home country. Indeed the island was occupied by the Japanese forces in 1942, but they were defeated in 1943.

The battlefield area and subsequent military sites were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1985. However historians will find evidence of a rather turbulent and lengthy period of time, dealing with the problem of who should be allowed to build memorials to the fallen soldiers, and where they should be located. Indeed, in 2006 a documentary film featuring the issues and related problems, entitled ‘Red White Black and Blue’ and directed by Tom Putman, was debuted at the Film Festival in Locarno Switzerland.

A search to find any remains of Japanese soldiers in the area was continued for some time. However, as of August 1st 2010 the United States Coast Guard station on Attu permanently ceased operation, and a little later the station was decommissioned and the Coast Guard personnel left, leaving the island with no resident population.
