Clean Cruising was great & we wouldn't hesitate recommending you to other people, but we are still deciding if we are the 'cruising type'. Some things are great but other aspects of cruising are a bit repetitious. 9 nights is about as much as we could handle."

Magong is an island and city in the Penghu archipelago of 90 islands in the Taiwan Strait. The island of Taiwan lies 50 km east of Magong. The mainland People’s Republic of China lies 150 km to the west. Magong is part of the Republic of China. The Penghu Islands of Taiwan have a rich history of piracy, imperialism and colonization. Temples and traditional homes, along with the rich natural landscape, are the main features of tourism here. While fisheries has been the main industry for Penghu, this century tourism has become a major source of income for the county.

Cruise ships sailing from Hong Kong to Shanghai pass by Magong in the Taiwan Strait. The name Magong is derived from the Hanyu Pinyin romanisation system for Standard Chinese, which replaced Makung in 2009. The name Magong has a connection back to the late 16th C and the island’s Mazu temple, Mazu being a Chinese sea goddess and benevolent queen of heaven. The Mazu Temple in Magong is said to be the oldest temple in Taiwan, dating from the 15th C. Walk around the little alleys nearby the temple, and look out for the Well of a Thousand Soldiers.

Historical sites include Central Street, Four-eyed Well, Qimei Lighthouse, Siyu Eastern Fort, Jinguitou Fortress and Siyu Western Fort. Museums in the county are Chuwan Crab Museum, Ocean Resources Museum, Chang Yu-sheng Memorial Museum and Penghu Living Museum. Other attractions include the Double-Heart of Stacked Stones, Little Taiwan, Whale Cave, Xiaomen Geology Gallery and South Penghu Marine National Park. The fine beaches of white sand draw surfers and windsurfers from around the world. Coral markets are a big tourist attraction, and shops in Makung City sell all kinds of colours and varieties.
