Izmir is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by the eastern side of the Aegean Sea, part of Turkey's magnificent coastline that abounds in vast pristine beaches surrounded by olive groves, rocky crags and pine woods. The city comprises a range of architecturally diverse buildings that result in distinct historic neighbourhoods such as Basmane, Alsancak and Bornova, all of which are of great interest. The beautiful marble Izmir Clock Tower surrounded by four fountains, and the Agora Open Air Museum of Izmir, with well-preserved remains of ancient Smyrna, should not be missed.

The Smyrna of antiquity was founded by the Greeks, rebuilt by Alexander the Great, taken over by the Romans, and became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Today, its expansive archaeological sites include the Roman Agora of Smyrna (one of the seven churches of Revelation), now an open-air museum. The hilltop Kadifekale, or Velvet Castle, built during Alexander’s reign, overlooks the city. Walk around today's modern city, with street malls and side-walk restaurants. You'll find the showcases of beautiful wedding gowns and tailoring most appealing.

Also of interest are: the tomb of Tantalus; the Izmir Bird Paradise National Park with its 205 species; Sasali Park of Nature Life; a large open air zoo; and the Inciralti Sea Museum. Enjoy a ride on Izmir's Phaetons (horse drawn carriages), and enjoy exploring the three castles in the Kemeralti bazaar zone. You will find it difficult to choose just what to do as this fast-growing city certainly offers much to today's travellers. The Izmir Wildllife Park – especially the petting zoo - is very popular with youngsters.
