The Mutiny on the Bounty took place board the Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty on 28 April 1789, about 56 kms south-west of Tofua Island, Tonga. The mutiny was led by Fletcher Christian against the commanding officer, Captain William Bligh. The ship's mission was to sail from England to Tahiti, pick up breadfruit plants and transport them to the West Indies in order to grow them there as a cheap source of food for slaves. After five months in Tahiti, the Bounty set sail with its breadfruit cargo, the crew having lived ashore and socializing to the customs and culture of the Tahitians.

Several weeks into the return voyage mutiny broke out and the mutineers ordered Bligh and eighteen loyalists into the ship's launch. Bligh navigated the overcrowded 7 metre open launch on a 47 day, 6700 km voyage first to Tofua and then to Timor in the Dutch East Indies, equipped only with a sextant and a pocket watch and without charts or compass. First they sailed to nearby Tofua Island, seeking refuge in a cave on the sheltered north-west coast to augment their meager provisions, but left after a crewman was stoned to death by the natives. Thereafter they avoided landings and reached a small island on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Here they replenished supplies and named it Restoration Island before continuing north through the difficult Torres Strait along the way and landed in Timor on June 14, 1789.
