Sousse, an important tourist resort, lies on the central east coast of Tunisia on the gulf of Hammamet that is part of the Mediterranean Sea. It's easy to meet local people here, as they are friendly and easygoing. It has a good climate, a stunning beach and many options for enjoying day-trips.

The historic Medina, a World Heritage Site, is well preserved, and includes open and covered bazaars (souks), where wares are mainly aimed at tourists. Though not very large it is delightful and relaxed and is one of the finest in Tunisia. The main mosque with the outward appearance of a fortress, the Ribat is a fortified monastery built in 821AD, and the Kasbah that grew around the Watchtower, with its famous museum that features mosaics, are all worth visiting.

Some travel to the capital, a 2 hour train ride away, while others visit El Jem, which is home to spectacular Roman era ruins, as well as an informative museum that makes visitors almost feel like a Roman Emperor for a day. Interestingly it is also the location of ‘Indiana Jones’ films! If you simply wish to relax on the beautiful beaches, then be sure to try to visit one of the many fine restaurants and taste one of the renowned fish dishes.
