Cruises visiting Dili & all Dili cruises for  2019-2020

Dili is the capital, largest city, chief port and commercial centre of East Timor (Timor-Leste). It lies on the north coast of the island of Timur, the southern half of which is Indonesian territory. Darwin lies 715 km to the SE. The island was a Portuguese colony, and a Indonesian province from 1975 to 1999 marked by violence. The city is undergoing a rapid transformation, with most changes capturing the essence of reconstruction in East Timor. Burnt-out buildings still form a small part of the scenery, while its former Portuguese colonial flavour can still be found in remaining villas and churches along the seafront.

Dili spreads along the waterfront and all the way to the Jesus statue in the east. Most of the action occurs on the waterfront, or one or two blocks north of it. With its welcoming and friendly village atmosphere, the city has an almost Mediterranean flavour. If looking for any information on the resistance and atrocities of the Timorese struggle during the Indonesian occupation, The Archives & Museum of East Timorese Resistance is a must-see. The unique Cemetery of Santa Cruz, with its very colourful stones and decorations, has the details of the beginning and the end of Indonesian occupation.

The waterfront parks and white sand beaches are ideal for diving and relaxing. The Alola Foundation Centre & Shop is the very best, as it is a women's collective that supports local craftswomen through the sale of traditional arts. The very good prices are clearly marked, and haggling is neither necessary nor accepted. Of the buildings not destroyed in 1999, Portuguese architecture is evident, such as the Portuguese Governor’s Office. Inland, the island is dry and mountainous, producing some coffee (to Starbucks!) and sandalwood. Its economic future depends on vast offshore gas deposits - the "most oil-dependent economy in the world”. Languages are Tetum, Portuguese, Indonesian, and some English.
