The British Overseas Territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands lies SE of Florida. The capital, Cockburn (‘Co’burn’) Town, is located on the largest island in the Turks Islands archipelago, Grand Turk Island. It is known for tourism as well as being an offshore financial centre. Turks and Caicos Islands have one of the longest coral reefs in the world, making it a premier diving destination. Several Hollywood stars have built homes here. The currency used on the island is the US dollar and the spoken language is English. Taxis are widely available and many of the taxi drivers act as personal tour guides.

Rental cars, motor scooters and jeeps are available. If interested, bicycles are also very popular. Remember, in Turks and Caicos, you are to drive on the left side of the road. Cockburn Town is home to the islands National Museum, housed in an over 180 year old historical colonial era home with a delightful garden. Among its many collections is an exhibit of shipwrecks, including the oldest known European shipwreck in the Americas. The 1505 Molasses Reef Wreck, is perhaps one of the most original displays as it has a collection of messages in bottles that have washed ashore from all over the world.

Providenciales is home to a restaurant scene popular among tourists. The authentic local tastes, with on-the-beach spots such as Da Conch Shack attract locals and tourists alike in droves. The buildings in the colony's capital and seat of government reflect a 19th-century Bermudian style. Narrow streets are lined with low stone walls and old street lamps that are now powered by electricity. The restored natural salt pans and covered benches along the sluices offer shady spots for observing wading birds, including flamingos that frequent the shallows. Also of interest is the 19th century Her Majesty’s Prison, once home to runaway slaves.
