Tartous, the second largest port city of Syria, is located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The Crusader-era Templar fortress has within its walls both original and more recent buildings. Interestingly, the moat still separates this old town from the modern city on two sides. Tartous is a popular destination for tourists as the city offers good sandy beaches and several resorts. It has enjoyed major investments in the last few years, especially the Antaradus and Porto waterfront development. Outside the fortress - but of great historical interest - be sure to visit the former cathedral of Notre-Dame of Tartous, from the 12th century, which is now also the site of an amazing museum.

Indeed, Tartous and the surrounding area are rich in antiquities and archeological sites. Various important and well known sites are located within a 30-minute drive from the city. These include: the Marqab Castle with its famous watchtower and ramparts, the historic town of Safita that has been inhabited since the times of the Phonecians, and just a few kilometres off shore Arwad Island with its castle, as well as great beaches and crystal clear waters. .If time permits then visit Hasn Suleiman (56 km from Tartous), a Syrian village found on a mountain at an altitude of 950m that is an ancient temple made to the god Baal.

The outlying town of Al Hamidiyah just south of Tartous is notable for having a Greek-speaking population of Muslims numbering about 3,000. Their ancestors moved there in the late 19th century from Crete. Since the start of the Iraqi War, a few thousands of Iraqi nationals now reside in Tartous, and the area makes for an interesting contrast
