São Tomé (Portuguese: “Saint Thomas”) is a port on the island of the same name, one of two that constitute the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, a small island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Africa. In Africa’s second smallest country, this capital city is by far that nation's largest town, tranquil and pleasant with a relaxed, Portuguese-Creole atmosphere. After sundown it is dark with no street lights, so it's a good idea to try and cram as much activity into the day as possible. Tourists are only beginning to discover the island's capped volcanoes, thick jungle, and empty yet stunningly beautiful beaches.

On the larger island, São Tomé, is Lagoa Park, a biodiverse jungle preserve that covers much of São Tomé and is distinguished by Pico Cão Grande, a skyscraper-like volcanic rock. The Portuguese revolution of 1974 brought the end of the overseas empire, and on July 12, 1975, Lisbon granted São Tomé independence. Protests and unrest erupted throughout the 1990s over unemployment and soaring inflation. One of Africa's poorest countries, São Tomé has what are believed to be enormous untapped off-shore oil reserves.

Features of the town include the Presidential Palace, cathedral, heritage buildings, and plantation estates. São Tomé is well-known for its Tchiloli, a mixture of ceremony, theatre, music and dance characteristic of the town. The birdlife is excellent, and endemic plants (especially orchids) are plentiful. In season go turtle- and whale-watching. Farmers on the islands are currently enjoying success thanks to the high-quality, organic, Fairtrade cocoa - the raw ingredient for chocolate. Many of the small farmers, who were previously living on the edge of poverty, have seen a boost to their incomes.
