Kalmar is a city in the SE of Sweden, situated by the Baltic Sea. Kalmar has been the centre of Swedish glass making for centuries, and is home to some of the world's top glassworks including Kosta Boda. Thousands of tourists go there to buy handmade crystal or take a turn at glassblowing. In Kalmar the cobblestone streets guide visitors through centuries of the town’s history, as the city is home to architecture, dykes, and stone houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Here the more recent buildings are in tune with the old. Interestingly, the area around Kalmar has been inhabited since ancient times. Diggings have found traces of stone age gravefields. Also of import is the Oland bridge that is supported by 156 pillars and has a raised hump on the western side of the structure to allow ships to clear safely underneath.

Other places to visit include the very old Kalmar Castle with its wonderful wooden inlays in the master bed rooms, as well as some great activities for children. The castle’s secret passage ways, drawbridge, turrets, and moat, will get your imagination ticking and thinking of the days of the knights and Vikings that once roamed the grounds. Then there’s the Kalmar Cathedral that is a unique example of baroque architecture. Adding to its attraction, in the afternoons, there’s often a free concert of talented musicians or a choir. For those interested in shopping, be sure to visit the Gerdas Te and Kaffenhandel specialty shops.
