Tiny Yankicha Island is the emergent tip of an extinct volcano, located in the Kuril Islands of the Russian Far East. It is considered by many to be the most visually scenic island of the Kurils. Zodiacs are able to pass over the gravel bar at the entrance of the caldera where visitors are astounded by the view of the ongoing volcanic activity. On the way to Yankicha visitors scout for whales and sea otters from their appropriate sea vessels, as a Laysan albatross may be gliding in their wake, and with luck, spot the exceedingly rare short-tailed albatross.

At Yankicha, a sinking volcanic caldera offers access during high tides. Inside the magnificent lagoon, you witness the ongoing volcanic activity. The steep-walled caldera is broken to the south, allowing it to be flooded by the sea. This tranquil lagoon is filled with thermal waters, where harlequins and sea otters swim. The inner grassy slopes rise to the rocky rim where fulmars nest and the cliffs are covered with kittiwakes. Near the lip of the lagoon just cross a part of the beach to reach the open sea. This natural hot spring lagoon-bath indeed has a spectacular setting.

A highlight of a visit to Yankicha Island lagoon is the hydrothermal field with steaming fumaroles, sulfur crystals, hot springs and boiling puddles. Arctic foxes, harbour seals and abundant bird life inhabit the area. Grassy and rocky slopes are nesting grounds for crested auklets, and common and thick-billed murres make their home in the ledges of the vertical cliffs. While the goal is to land inside the caldera’s lagoon, there are several seal colonies that can be visited by Zodiacs if the weather and conditions on the day are favourable.
