Paramushir is a volcanic island, one of a string of 57 forming the Kuril Islands that separate the Sea of Okhotsk and the North Pacific Ocean. The archipelago stretches from Japan northwards to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and all but the southern two are under Russian jurisdiction. Paramushir island is made up of a chain of 23 volcanoes, five of them active, the highest reaching 1816m. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, decline in the herring fishery, and the massive tsunami of 1952, the island’s population has declined to a few thousand living in the NE port town Severo-Kurilsk.

For much of the year the island is blanketed in white, and in summer colourful wild flowers bloom and the symmetrical volcanic peaks on the skyline loose most of their snow. The island is scattered with reminders of WWII, tundra vegetation, and wildlife that includes brown bears, Red fox, Arctic hare and ermine. The sea life includes sea otters, harbour seals, and bird rookeries on cliff faces overlooking the sea.
