Onekotan Island is an uninhabited volcanic island located near the northern end of the Kuril Islands chain in the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East. It consists of two stratovolcanoes, Krenitsyn and Nemo, connected by a relatively flat isthmus.

On Onekotan Island you can walk to Black Lake. This lake lies in the lee of Volcano Nemo, with its two nested subsidiary calderas. Beautiful wildflowers carpet the meadows surrounding the lake. Among the birds here it is possible to see the red throated pipit, greenshank, buff bellied pipit and rough legged buzzard.

Krenitsyn, in the south, rises from a depth of 600 to 900 meters, and contains a deep central caldera lake, called Tao-Rusyr Caldera. At 1,325m, the central peak of this ‘island within the island’ is actually the highest point on Onekotan Island. You are sure to enjoy your visit to this unique island with a water-filled caldera at both its northern and southern ends!
