Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia, also the largest metropolitan area in Europe, and the seventh largest city in the world. Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational and transportation centre, and home to the largest number of billionaires in the world. In 2008 it was the world's most expensive city for foreign employees for the third year in a row. Located on the Moscow River, it was the capital of the former Soviet Union, Russian Empire, Tsardom of Russia and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. It is the site of the Moscow Kremlin (the residence of the President), and the Russian parliament.

The city is home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities. It possesses a complex transport system, that includes 3 international airports, 9 railroad terminals, and the world's second busiest (after Tokyo) metro system which is famous for its architecture and artwork. There is a vibrant night life in Moscow. The major and one of the most popular nightlife areas is around Tverskaya Street. The southern part near the Manege Square and the Red Square area are busy shopping districts and the location of many expensive bars and restaurants.

All tourists see the Kremlin (“fortress inside a city”) and Red Square first. (“Red” in Russian culture is associated with beauty, preceding its political overtone). Having originally been a market and an execution yard, Red Square is now the first port of call for foreign and local tourists alike. Today it is the centre of Moscow life, allowing visitors to plunge into the history of the city quickly and easily. When visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, dress accordingly. However, if you forget, you can visit Tverskaya Street which is famous for its fashion boutiques.
