Very helpful when we forgot to take our schedule of travel into the Chinese embassy to obtain our visa. Athena was kind enough to fax the paperwork through straight away enabling us to apply for the visa instead of making another trip into the city which was very much appreciated."

Kaliningrad is a seaport in the Russian enclave Kaliningrad Oblast between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic Sea. It is situated at the mouth of the Pregel River. The city was the Old Prussian city Königsberg from the 13th C; then part of Germany; and since 1945 came under Russian control and changed to its present name. Russian people settled after World War II and introduced another culture. A former Hansa city and the most western territory of Russia, it is at present the only ice-free Russian port. It is the home of the Russian Baltic fleet and during the Cold War the Oblast was the most militarised part of Europe.

In 1255 Koenigsberg Castle was founded on bank of the Pregel river, and the city actively participated in trade activities as a member of the Hanza Union. The silhouette of the main cathedral built in the 14th C reminds us of the real age of the city. The museums of Kaliningrad tell us the rich history of the region and its modern life. Some are: the Museum of the World Ocean, the Cathedral, the History and Art Museum, the Art Gallery, and numerous monuments connected with the war history. The city has seven gates, including the Brandenburg Gate protected as an architectural monument.

Königsberg was the home of Kant, hence it includes many memorials: the Immanuel Kant Museum, statues, and his grave next to Königsberg Cathedral. The city includes many parks, bridges, monuments, restored buildings after a variety of architectural styles, cultural centres. Leonhard Euler's 1736 paper on the puzzle of the Seven Bridges of Königsberg was key to the field of topology. Only two of the bridges survive. Currently, Kaliningrad's major industries are manufacturing, shipping, fishing and amber products. As a Special Economic Zone, it aims to become "the Russian Hong Kong". As for dining, enjoy all the dishes of Russia and international cuisines.
