My consultant Lisa Eswards was most helpful and attentive to all my enquiries and made the whole process of booking and a cabin change seamlessly easy. She is a great asset to your company, a lovely person to interact with as nothing was too much trouble for her."

Velas (pop. 5400) is a portside town on São Jorge Island of the Azores in the North Atlantic Ocean. Velas is one of nine islands in the archipelago. São Jorge Island is a relatively long thin island (54 km by 6 km at its widest). Velas on the southern coast is situated on one of the few coastal locations suitable for a town. Most of the coastline rises abruptly from the sea, with cliffs to 500 m, particularly on the north side. Much of the plateau is grazing land, and from the heights there are magnificent views of the rugged coast. The highest point is Pico de Esperança at 1053 m.

Walk around this picturesque town. See the stratovolcano Mt Pico (2351 m), the highest mountain of Portugal, 28 km to the SW on Pico Island. In town look for the natural rock arch. Hire a vehicle to explore the island. The economy is dependent on the dairy industry, so taste São Jorge cheese. The Forest of the Macelas Plateau is around six hectares at an altitude of 400 m. The site affords panoramic views of the south coast, Pico Channel, and the island of Faial to the east. There are many enchanting rock pools for bathing, if you can clamber down the hill sides. At the foot of the cliffs can be seen fajãs, basalt platforms resulting from cliff-face erosion.

The islands are of volcanic and seismic origin and have many geological formations of interest to visitors. The Azores’ most severe earthquake was registered in 1757, 5 km SE of Velas, which exceeded 7 on the Richter magnitude scale. Records of São Jorge Island date from the early 15th C and the island has been settled since then by people from Flanders, Spain and principally Portugal.
