Andrew went out of his way to really help me find the right combination of cruises, especially wonderful on the communication by emails, which is really important as we are living in the Solomon Islands! Would definitely recommend him to anyone!"

Santa Cruz (pop. 4400) is a Portuguese municipality on the island of Graciosa, in the archipelago of the Azores. Of the nine islands, Graciosa is the 2nd smallest, at 12 km maximum width. The island groups lies 1590 km due west of Lisbon, Portugal. The island in known to have had European settlers from the 15th C, to have been attacked by pirates and privateers in the 16th and 17th C, and consequently fortifications built. Most of the island is under cultivation, houses built along the road corridors, with the exception of the southern quarter that rises to an extinct volcanic crater (405 m).

Overlooking the town is the 130 m Monte da Ajuda from which one can take in a panoramic view of the coast. Today Santa Cruz is the principle settlement of Graciosa, a town of white houses with clay-tiled roofs, and attractive gardens. In town there’s just one building made of black stone – the 16th C Parish Church of Santa Cruz da Graciosa. Walk around the tree-laden central square Praça Fontes Pereira de Melo and its two decorative ponds, the town hall and bell tower, and its many beautiful manor and town houses. North of the town hall, towards the seafront, lies the ethnographic Museu da Graciosa.

West of Santa Cruz remains of the once thriving viticulture industry, the vineyards of the island’s most important vine-growing estate, protected by dark basalt stonewalls. At the north coast lies Barro Vermelho, a popular picnic and bathing venue with a natural swimming pool, taking its name from the red clay in this area.
