Lajes do Pico (pop.4700) lies on the southern shore of the mountainous Pico Island in the Azores archipelago, North Atlantic Ocean. The island is the second largest of the nine islands. It is dominated by Mount Pico at 2351 m, the highest point in Portugal. This was an old whaling town, and visitors may take a whale and dolphin watching tour. The Whaler’s Museum (on the north coast) relates the history of whale hunting via film and artefacts. The best way to learn about life on Pico Island is to take a 100 km or so tour around the periphery. Get to appreciate the island of Pico for a day with a local guide. At a dozen stops are centres of interest.

There are also many other museums cross the island, such as the Maritime and Naval Construction Museum. Pay a worthwhile visit to the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture Interpretation Centre (on the north top of the island) to understand this cultural heritage. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Here you can see various walls that run parallel and perpendicular to the coastline. Vineyards are planted in black lava grounds. Near here are the Gruta das Torres, the biggest lava tube in Portugal, with a length of 5150 m.

The medieval fort of Santa Catarina, with the hilltop neighbourhood of Almagreia, is to the north of Lajes. To the west of Lajes is the Forest Park of Saõ Joaõ, with restored windmill and unique lava flows. Be adventurous, climb Mount Pico.
