Cruises visiting Ponce & all Ponce cruises for  2019-2020

Ponce, the second largest city after San Juan in Puerto Rico, is often referred to as ‘The Pearl of the South’. (Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States.) It is bordered on the south coast by the Caribbean Sea and experiences the Atlantic hurricane season (June through November, 2% chance in one week’s cruise). Many of the city's features are modelled on Barcelona's, due to the city's strong Catalonian heritage. The atmosphere is charmingly laid-back and the very attractive, compact downtown area can be explored on foot due to its quality sidewalks. There is also a tourist "chu-chu train" that does a loop of the downtown.

Museums and restaurants are near Plaza las Delecias, the central plaza. Visitors will notice that many of the city’s historic Spanish colonial Art Deco and neo-Classical buildings have been restored. Of interest is the Parque de Bombas that is the symbol of the city. Now painted with distinctive red and black stripes, the former fire station houses the tourist office and a free exhibition of the history of fire fighters in Ponce. There’s also the Ponce Massacre Museum on Marina Street. The Museum of Puerto Rican Architecture, the only one in the Island, is housed in this 100-year-old residence on Reina Street.

Water activities include swimming at the popular El Tuque beach, or taking a half day guided snorkelling excursion to Caja De Muertos. It is an uninhabited island just off the coast where one can visit a century-old lighthouse, empty stretches of beaches and a marked underwater snorkel trail. Cabs are plentiful and inexpensive so many choose to visit the Hacienda Buena Vista Plantation, an historic coffee plantation that has been turned into a museum. Another option is to drive up a corkscrew of a highway through to the island’s verdant interior and appreciate the delightful the rural setting of Ponce.
