Ducie Island is an uninhabited atoll in the South Pacific, one of the Pitcairn Group of four islands. If you viewed this island from a satellite at 5000 km, Ducie Atoll would be a dot in the centre of a hemisphere of Pacific blue, with the North Island of New Zealand the only significant land mass in view. That’s how isolated is the Pitcairn Group. Pitcairn and Henderson Islands lie 537 and 354 km respectively to the west of Ducie. Ducie’s four islets are set in a ring around a lagoon 2 km long. Its actual land area is only 700 sq.m. The Pitcairn Group is volcanic in origin.

Ducie Atoll was originally settled by Polynesians, became uninhabited, then was rediscovered by Fernandez in 1606; and again by HMS Pandora in 1791 in the search for the Bounty mutineers. The islands became a British Overseas Territory in 1902. The island’s four islets are Acadia, Pandora, Westward and Edwards. Acadia Islet is the largest, forested with straggly cabbage trees, and consisting of coral rubble. In 1881 the mail ship Acadia ran aground and a memorial marker marks the location. The ship’s mast lies on the beach. All four islets can be reached on foot at low tide.

Due to its inaccessibility and the distance from Pitcairn Island, Ducie is rarely visited today, but cruise ships make a few landings per year. Whirlpools in the lagoon are common, caused by caves that drain the water from the lagoon into the ocean. Most of the coral in the lagoon is dead. The lagoon is noted for its poisonous fishes and dangerous sharks. The island is a breeding ground of 13 seabird species that include Murphy's petrel, Red-tailed Tropicbirds, Fairy Terns, Herald and Kermadec petrels, and Christmas shearwaters.
