Cruises visiting Szczecin & all Szczecin cruises for  2020

Szczecin (Stettin) is the largest city in NW Poland, the country’s seventh largest city, and home to its largest seaport. It lies on the Oder River, about 60 km inland from the Baltic Sea. An attraction of the city is its many fabulous buildings. For a good overview of the city, visit Cafe22 located on the top floor of the Pazim building. Well off the track of non-German tourists, this port city of Szczecin is a lively city awash with students and a range of architectural styles inherited from wildly different ages. You’ll see crumbly German-era Art Nouveau tenements and mansions, some now undergoing renovation, which echo a past splendour; but the historical style is patchy.

The city has an abundance of green parks and monuments that reflect its troubled history. The post-war reconstruction focused on Renaissance building reconstruction. Yet many gaps in the city centre are filled with glass-and-steel malls, sacrificing entire streets in the name of retail. Many of the main thoroughfares have been spruced up, but derelict buildings and overgrown plots are easy to find in the very heart of the city. The Waly Chrobrego Promenade is a very nice old place in Szczecin that houses some very old buildings and anyone who loves history will appreciate the 500m walk.

This is a busy working port, though you’d never know it wandering the city centre. Kaskada makes some malls around in Europe look miniature in comparison, you can easily spend half a day walking around and browsing through stores, as well as getting something uniquely Polish from the many different food outlets. Also of importance to visitors in the summer is Kasprowicza Park with its delightful Rose Garden that is remembered as a delicately scented haven of peace and tranquillity.
