Salomague village and port lie in the province of IIlocos Sur at the NW of Luzon Island in the Philippines. This was an ancient port of call for seafarers, merchants and traders from different Asian countries. During the American occupation (1901-1944) it served as a mooring place from boats that ferried across the Pacific where thousands of Ilocanos worked at sugar plantations in Hawaii and California. There’s a statue at the port to commemorate the thousands of workers (sakadas; the last 6000 left for Hawaii in 1946). People in the region of Salomague are primarily engaged in farming and fishing.

The climate of the region is characterized by two seasons, dry and wet. Dry season around November to April, while the rainy season starts in May until October. The waters off Salomague port are clear and blue. Surf in turquoise waters or sip on fresh mango juice in a comfy lounge chair on the beach. Just NW of the port is uninhabited Salomague Island and can be reached in five minutes ride by small boat. The waters around attract sports fishers and scuba divers who regularly visit it. Picnickers also frequent its eastern coast. Six kilometres inland from the port is the town of Cabugao, and two kilometres north of this town are popular yet secluded white-sand beaches

Head about an hour south to historic Vigan City, home to a variety of Spanish colonial architecture with dramatic Baroque accents. Ride a horse-drawn calesa buggy past landmarks such as St. Paul's Metropolitan Cathedral and the Spanish-era archbishop's residence. The bright orange roofs reflect the afternoon sun and the sound of hooves on cobblestone is reminiscent of earlier days.
