Tufi is a small village in the Oro Province on the NE coast of Papua New Guinea on the Bird’s Tail Peninsula, overlooking the Coral Sea. The village is approached by sea or by air on the grassed airstrip at the water’s edge. Inland rises to mountains and rain forest. The coastline consists of dozens of rias or drowned river valleys, surrounded by numerous uncharted reefs in pristine waters. Ashore is a dive resort that offers accommodations, cultural tours, bird watching, kayaking, fishing and diving. Wildlife locally is breath-taking: 28cm butterflies, cuscuses, wallabies, echidnas, tree kangaroos and orchids.

The Cape Nelson was formed by ancient eruptions of its three volcanoes and the lava that flowed down into the sea created the rias for which the cape is now famous. Being located on the tropical fjord, which is surrounded by stunning marine biodiversity, makes this a unique reef system. Coral outcrops are so abundant that the saying “More fish than water” is a common phrase. The region truly is an undiscovered mecca for diving enthusiasts, as apart from the huge variety of fish there are several varieties of sharks, including the rare white hammerhead, while turtles, manta rays and eagle rays.

Add to this an unspoilt pristine environment, and untouched WWII historical dive sites of both ships and planes, and the adventure is absolutely stunning. Gain an insight into the indigenous culture by touring the local villages, tattooed men and women in colourful dress with betelnut smiles, and take the opportunity to see the orchids, birds and butterflies of the dense rainforest and lowland areas on some guided bush and nature walks. Kayaking and snorkelling are also available. In all respects this is truly an outrageously beautiful destination. Incidentally, Tufi is also 130km south east of the famous Kokoda Trail. Oh, when visiting, bring some books for the school.
