The Sepik is the longest river on the island of New Guinea, and is Papua New Guinea's equivalent to the Amazon and the Congo Rivers. The 1126 km river flows from the Victor Emanuel Range through an undeveloped catchment to the Bismarck Sea with no delta. Situated in the mystical East Sepik Province on the north coast of Papua New Guinea, the river is central to the everyday lives of the people who live along its banks. It has formed the basis for food, transport and culture. The tribes living along the river produce magnificent wood carvings, clay pottery and other art and craft.

The river valley has long been famous for the quality of its art which reflects the Sepik idea of magic, myth and ritual. Many tribes use garamut drums in ritual. The drums are formed from long, hollowed-out tree trunks carved into the shape of various totem animals. The people's strong belief in the spirit world is integral to their way of life, as reflected for example in the decorations of their Spirit houses, and their elaborate initiation ceremonies. As the river's catchment area is largely undisturbed, with no major urban developments or forestry and mining activities, the river system is the largest uncontaminated freshwater wetland system in the Asia-Pacific.

Historically, European contact by Germans began in 1885 when the region was part of German New Guinea. After the first World War the Australian government took trusteeship of the German colony. The Japanese held the area for most of WWII. For most of its lower course it winds through a wilderness of sago, palm swamp and lagoons taking sediment way out to sea through its 2.5 km mouth. Small ships navigate 500 km upstream, canoes to 900 km. Locals are sure to give a warm welcome to foreign visitors, so relax and enjoy this truly unique cultural experience.
