Lusancay Islands and Reefs lie in the Solomon Sea, south of the 5000m deep Trobriand Trench, and west of Kiriwina Island in the Trobriand archipelago. They are part of Papua New Guinea’s Milne Bay Province. There are 17 Luscany Islands and many reefs that spread 100 km from east to west and just as far from north to south. The islands stand in a large area of shallow water. Only the main island of Kawa and the island of Simsim (Konia) are inhabited, with 165 and 125 inhabitants to the 2000 census. The main island of Kawa is the largest island by area and population. In the past, Kwaiyaluma was probably inhabited as well. The easternmost of the Lusancay Islands is Silipuaka (Silipwaka).

The 17 islands are divided into an eastern, a southern and a western group, centred about 200 km due north of Milne Bay. Many islands have the shape of a long spit of sand populated with up to dozens of tall coconut palms and low green undergrowth. In this region navigators must be extremely wary of hidden reefs. Take a stroll around your very own deserted island, snorkel in the shallows, or drop off the outer-reef for a spectacular dive. The fishing is second to none – battle with tuna, mackerel or even a sailfish.
