Dobu Island is part of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands in the Solomon Sea off Papua New Guinea. It lies just south of Ferguson Island, the largest in the island group, and north of Normanby Island. Dobu lies about 60 km north of the very easternmost tip of Papua New Guinea. The island is about 3 km across, and rises to a flat-topped peak at 260 m, surrounded by steep thickly forested cliffs. There is a small settlement with school at the NW, and other dwellings spread sparsely around its perimeter. As these islands have volcanic origins, you many come upon steamy hot springs on Dobu Island.

The inhabitants have been the subjects of a number of anthropological studies. The New Zealander Reo Franklin Fortune made the island famous in his 1932 book, The Sorcerers of Dobu: the social anthropology of the Dobu Islanders of the Western Pacific. Also, there’s Susanne Kuehling’s Dobu: Ethics of Exchange on a Massim Island, Papua New Guinea. The society is “cloaked in exotic mystery.”

Beautiful seashell and bead artifacts are traded between villages. Visitors will also be interested in their hand woven straw baskets, and ingenious ‘fishing kites.’ Many houses are on stilts, with shaded areas underneath. Visitors will also be entranced by their native palm attire and colourful flower displays of the traditional dress. In the water, snorkel and scuba dive among the corals; you may even see volcanic gases bubble from sulfur-encrusted underwater geothermal vents.
