Tahuata is the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, in the Pacific Ocean. Situated 1400 km to the NE of Tahiti, the jagged island rises to a height of 1050 m. Isolated without an airfield, the 700 or so inhabitants are reached by boat from nearby Hiva Oa. The largest of its four small villages is Vaitahu on the western side. Venturing inland along tracks is arduous on the steep terrain. Historically, the first (Spanish) Europeans arrived in 1595, Captain Cook landed in 1774, Christian missionaries in 1797, and the Marquesas Islands were annexed by France in 1842.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Tahuata was inhabited by Polynesians as early as 200 CE. A building that early Spaniard explorers thought to be a religious one stands outside Vaitahu in a space enclosed by palisades. It contains some ill-carved images in front of which were placed offerings and provisions. The people in early times had large and well constructed sailing canoes, their tools were made of shells and fish bones, and they used slings, stones, and lances as weapons. Today the village has a number of churches

Be sure to visit the Vaitahu town hall, and the church that is decorated with magnificent stained glass windows. A few minutes away by speedboat, the village of Hapatoni is worth a visit. An ancient stone road follows the shore in the shade of trees that are hundreds of years old. While there be sure to visit the Arts Centre. This island is visited by very few tourists, so the peaceful villages make guests feel far removed from their problems from the outside world. Add to this the white and often deserted sand beaches, and one feels completely at peace.
