Everything went smoothly from the time we made the first phone call to book our cruise, until the day we disembarked the Queen Elizabeth. No problems at all. Will be booking another cruise again if it is this easy each time. Thank You"

Nuku Hiva is the largest of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France. The Marquises lie 1400 km NE of Tahiti. The island is about 25 km across, with a high inland plateau and the highest peak Tekao at 1224 m. The coastline of western Nuku Hiva is notable for its steep but fairly regular coastline, indented occasionally by small bays leading to deep valleys that lead into the interior. In contrast to the common perception of lush tropical vegetation that goes culturally hand-in-hand with the name Polynesia, the Marquesas are remarkably dry islands.

The village of Taiohae, on the south side of the island, is the governmental hub of the archipelago. Spend time on the black sand beach at the local bay, explore the valleys and plantations on horseback and enjoy the stunning views. To the eastern side of the village see the beautiful, giant 'tiki', as well as the cathedral of Notre-Dame of the Marquesas, built from coloured stones from all the islands, and admire the fine wood carvings. You may even be able to visit some of the archaeological remains and ancient rock engravings from as early as 300 AD.

The island is very rustic and not touristy, and its population is down now to 2600. The interior is marked by jagged peaks, green valleys and dramatic waterfalls: Jurassic park without the dinosaurs. There are many archaeological sites, sacred statues and rockpile ruins of houses. Marquesans are the best carvers in the South Pacific, so visit an artisan’s market (not on Sundays). The people are extremely friendly and most speak a little English. It truly is a great spot to visit and relax, while you become lost in the former glory of this fascinating civilisation.
