Over a thousand kilometres SE of Tahiti are the Gambier Islands, also a part of French Polynesia. Mangareva, the largest island of the archipelago, is home to most of the population and the centre of the region's pearl industry. Mangareva and a few small islands are contained within a lagoon 24 km across, bounded by a reef. Fish and shellfish within the lagoon sustain the population. The lagoons of Mangareva are known for their pearl oysters, as large and famous pearl farms are located here. The simple pearl farms produce some of the world's highest-quality black pearls.

Many take a walk around the coastal road – the island is only 6 km end-to-end and narrow – with bay after bay stretching out into the blue sea. Dozens of little pearl farm houses stand on stilts just off shore. Most of the island's small family pensions are located in the town of Rikitea. There you’ll find Cathedral Saint Michel that dates back to 1848, the largest and oldest monument of French Polynesia , richly decorated with mother-of-pearl. To the SW overlooking Rikitea is Mt. Duff at 370 m, the only volcanic remnant of all the original volcanoes that made up the Tuamotu archipelago

Being stranded on the edge of the world, Mangareva doesn’t have bars, restaurants, hotels, cafes or shops. While there are the inevitable coconut palms waving their fronds on the warm afternoon breeze, in places Mangareva appears as rugged and dry as Australia, with bare, brown, grass hillsides and crumbling, rocky escarpments. Mangareva is a stopping point for travellers departing Tahiti sailing to Pitcairn Island, which lies 700 km further east.
