Apataki is a coral atoll in the Palliser Islands group, which in turn is a sub-group of the Tuamotu Archipelago, and administered by French Polynesia. It lies 370 km to the NE of Tahiti. The island is shaped roughly as a rectangular strip of land enclosing a lagoon, of about 27 km by 36 km. There are two navigable entrances to the lagoon (and many shallow channels), to the NW and SW. Apataki is surrounded by neighbouring atolls; indeed the Tuamotu Archipelago consists of around 80 islands and atolls forming the largest chain of atolls in the world (c.1600 km long). The atolls are high sand bars built upon coral reefs.

At the SW entrance to the lagoon is the only small settlement of Niutahi, population 350, and a 900 m domestic airstrip. Tourism is uncommon (with little tourist accommodation), and the island’s economy is predominantly based on subsistence agriculture, with additional income from the cultivation of black pearls and the preparation of copra sourced from a coconut plantation. Pandanus palms are invaluable for thatching and weaving. Fruit and vegetable staples include yams, taro, and breadfruit, as well as a wide range of tropical fruits. Land animal life consists mostly of seabirds, land crabs, insects, and lizards.

The two large reef passes provide entry for yachts, and great diving and surfing. The under-water life is rich, making scuba diving popular with tourists. Try the local cuisine - yams, taro, and breadfruit, as well as a wide range of tropical fruits. Past visitors include Dutch navigator Roggeven (1722) and James Cook (1774).
