Named by Christopher Colombus on his final voyage to America in 1502, Portobelo is a small city with a deep natural harbor in the Colon Province of Panama. It is located on the northern part of the Isthmus of Panama, halfway between the Panama Canal and the San Blas Archipelago. The most interesting and historic ruins are the ones most accessible to the visitor. The forts of Santiago and San Geronimo are each but a 5-minute walk from the pier. Even closer is the Customs House, built in 1630, and the remains of the church of La Merced.

Of special interest is the church of San Felipe, the last to be built by the Spaniards. Of special attraction is a priceless relic, a beautifully carved statue of Jesus of Nazareth. Because of the dark wood from which it is made it is known as the ‘Black Christ’. This picturesque village also features the ruins of five Spanish forts, a restored treasure house, and the burial place of Sir Francis Drake. In 1976 the fortifications were enclosed in the newly-formed Portobelo National Park, and in 1980 UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. The forts are standing to this day.

Visit Treasure Island where - it is assumed - are hidden the treasures of Sir Francis Drake. It is home to a garden of coral and tropical fish, virgin white beaches, clear waters, and where you can enjoy a tropical drink or a cold beer. There are also several good snorkelling and scuba diving sites off the coasts of Portobelo, which is an additional activity that divers should take advantage of when visiting the area. Enjoy spectacular views and photographs.
