Holandes Cayes (Dutch Keys) are a group of small islands, San Blas Islands, off the northern coast of Panama, in the Caribbean Sea. They lie about 120 km east of the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal. The archipelago consists of 365 islands of which around 49 are inhabited. The Cayes are of low elevation, built of sand on coral. The surrounding waters are filled with coral reefs, and are great for snorkeling and sailing – but beware, “Wreck Reef” earned its name from Spanish ships that floundered there. About 370 km to the east is the closest major port of Cartagena, in Columbia.

The palm-covered islands are part of the autonomous Guna Yala indigenous territory mainly populated by the indigenous Kuna Indians. The matrilinear Kuna are renowned for their brightly-coloured textiles and national dress. The Kuna Indian molas (traditional blouse panels), made from a wide range of coloured fabrics, are very collectible. They are designed to be framed. Their economy is mainly based on tourism, fishing, coconut harvesting, manufacture of textiles, and trading are their specialties. In one of the villages get to know about Kuna daily life.

The Cayes are delightful for wading, boating, and perhaps you’ll be refreshed with a coconut drink. The thatched huts and dugout canoes give a sense of the relaxed lifestyle of the Panamanian Caribbean. San Blas and its surrounding area is a haven for ecotourists because of its pristine environs. Sailing and back-packing are popular, and the area is hurricane-free.
