White Island (Whakaari) is an active volcano 48 km off the shores of Whakatane located in the Bay of Plenty on New Zealand's beautiful North Island. It is New Zealand’s most active cone volcano; indeed, it has been in a nearly continuous stage of smoking at least since it was 'discovered' and named by James Cook in 1769. The island is small, roughly circular, about 2 km across, and rises to just 321m. The main activities on the island now are guided tours, and scientific research that has the island under constant surveillance. A number of attempts to mine sulfur have left remains of the miners’ huts and equipment.

White Island is one of the most fascinating and accessible volcanoes on earth, carrying with it an A-grade level of scientific importance. As New Zealand’s only live marine volcano, scientists and volcanologists worldwide are attracted by its unique features. Walking on White Island is like walking on the moon. Virtually no vegetation survives the harsh acidic environment inside the crater walls, which enclose its spectacular lake punctuated by steamy vents. Lush beds of yellow and white sulphur crystals grow amongst hissing, steaming, bubbling fumaroles. The island is privately owned, and is visited by permission.

In contrast to these natural features, stand the ruins of an old factory, the only human testament to the numerous failed sulphur mining attempts of days gone by, and now slowly being reclaimed by Mother Nature. Because White Island is one of the world's best scuba diving destinations, imagine diving at the top of a volcano. It provides a very unique dive experience! As such, it attracts hundreds of divers every year. Enjoy the incredible experience of exploring the inner crater of New Zealand’s only active marine volcano!
