Our cruise experience was made all the better because of Carli Fergusson, she was extremely friendly and knowledgable, she looked after everything and it all went off perfectly. Carlis' advice on where to stay prior to our cruise was excellent and she took care of all the arrangements including our flights and accomodation which made our holiday all the more enjoyable."

Cruises visiting Russell & all Russell cruises for  2019-2020

View Russell 2019-2020 cruises for 2 ships listing 6 cruises from Russell with today's best deals!

Russell - aka Kororareka - is situated in the Bay of Islands, at the far north of the North Island of New Zealand. As a safe anchorage and seaport, it was the first permanent European settlement in New Zealand. It is also famous for being responsible for the signing of the historically important Treaty of Waitangi, generally considered the founding document of New Zealand as a nation, on 6 February 1840. In the early 1800s Maoris and European ship traded there, and Kororareka served as a vital resupply port for whaling and sealing operations.

Today Russell is now mostly a centre of cafés, gift shops, B&Bs and holiday homes. Russell offers numerous galleries, craft shops, souvenir outlets and clothing stores, all an easy stroll within the town precinct. It is also home to the oldest surviving industrial building in New Zealand, Roman Catholic missionaries’ Pompallier House, as well as Christ Church, which is the country's oldest surviving Anglican church. A short walk north of town takes you up 80m to Flagstaff Hill which gives a 360 deg. View of the Bay of Islands. The flagstaff (the fifth, the four earlier having been cut down) played a significant roll in early relations between Maori and colonials.

Fishing, sightseeing or island-hopping half- or full-day trips are also available, as are trips on some beautiful yachts. The Omata Estate Vineyard, in a stunning location on a sheltered hilltop with wonderful views across the vines to the bay, is a popular destination. Just Imagine Gallery is a unique art space established in 2004. It showcases the superb work of a range of established international artists as well as the delightful work of the local artists. Also on offer is a selection of books that deal with Maori history and culture, as well as New Zealand pictorials.
