The Antipodes Islands lie 860 km SE of New Zealand, of which it is a part. These inhospitable subantarctic islands are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The island group is a nature reserve and there is no general public access. These isolated, windswept, beautiful and fragile islands were so named because they are very close to the antipodes, the point on the earth's opposite London; and indeed they are opposite the English Channel near France. The volcanic islands - the highest point is Mt Galloway at 366m - consist the main island, Antipodes Island, smaller Bollons Island, and numerous islets. The sub-Antarctic group is a nature reserve and on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The island group was first charted in 1800 by Captain Henry Waterhouse of the British ship HMS Reliance. In the early 1800s the island led a boom in fur seal skins, and an attempt at cattle rasing in the late 1800s failed. Antipodes Island (20 is mainly remembered as a place of shipwrecks. From 1868 the New Zealand government established a string of castaway depots on its subantarctic islands, and one remains on Antipodes Island. Signposts across the island directed castaways to the huts. Steamers visited each island every six months checking for shipwreck survivors, who lived with "incessant gales, constant hail, snow and pelting rain."

The islands are steep, and cliffs and rocky reefs line the majority of the coasts. They are home to endemic Antipodes snipe, Antipodes parakeet, and varieties of albatrosses, petrels and erect-crested penguins. No fur seals remain. The New Zealand Department of Conservation’s promoted the Million Dollar Mouse Campaign that has successfully removed all introduced rodents from Antipodes Island. Rare insects, plants and birds found only on the Antipodes Island Nature Reserve and World Heritage Area will benefit. This entire remote region has a dramatic beauty in its isolation and starkness.
