The Auckland Islands, or Motu Maha, form an archipelago of the Antipodes Subantarctic Islands tundra ecoregion, and they lie 465 km from the South Island port of Bluff. From the early 19th C whalers and sealers set up temporary bases there, and explorers included Dumont D’Urville (giving name to a future Ponant Yacht Cruises explorer vessel) and James Ross. Intermittent efforts were made to permanently settle the islands. Today they have no permanent human inhabitants, though scientists visit regularly, and limited tourism on Enderby and Auckland Islands is allowed. They were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.

The main island, Auckland Island, is notable for its rugged terrain of many sharply-incised inlets – notably Port Ross at the northern end – and steep cliffs that rise to over 600 m. A narrow channel, the remains of the crater of an extinct volcano, separates it from neighbouring Adams Island, which is even more mountainous, and forms part of the crater rim. The islands have attracted numerous shipwrecks. This lead to the establishment of emergency depots across the islands since 1868 to provide cached supplies for shipwrecked sailors.

The islands are known for ‘the most ferocious weather of the planet’, the diversity of flora, the seabird breeding colonies, and the variety of land birds that are of great interest to visitors. Then there are the seals and a healthy population of more than a thousand Southern Right whales. Add to this the fascination of the fish that live in salt water as juveniles and return to freshwater as adults, together with the largest communities of subantarctic invertebrates, that makes the islands a most fascinating place to visit.
