Niue Island, 2,400 km NE of New Zealand, is an island country of 260 sq.km. and population of 1600 Polynesians. It lies at the centre of a triangle formed by Samoa, Tonga and Cook Islands. Niue is commonly known as the Rock of Polynesia, or just 'the Rock'. English is spoken by half the population, while the common language is Niuean. The capital is Alofi, the largest of 14 villages. Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. The terrain consists of steep limestone cliffs along the coast with a central plateau rising to about 60 metres above sea level. A coral reef surrounds the island, with one opening to Alofi.

The first Europeans to sight Niue sailed under Captain James Cook in 1774. The island enjoys the tropical climate of the South Pacific islands. There is an emphasis on preserving the culture of the island with art work, both on canvas and traditional tapa cloth, as well as traditional music – primarily providing the beat for the intriguing dances – all of which is thoroughly enjoyed by visitors. If you are feeling energetic, walk amongst flocks of butterflies in virgin rain forest, cycle beneath avenues of perfumed tropical flowers, and explore the breathtaking caves, found close to the coast.

There are opportunities to swim with whales and dolphins or dive to explore dramatic underwater cathedrals in water teeming with life. Snorkelling over bright corals in warm tropical water, acclaimed as being amongst the clearest in the world, is another popular experience. A notable feature is the number of limestone caves found close to the coast. Interestingly, Niue became the first country in the world to offer free wireless internet to all its people, the first country in the world where laptops are provided to all its school students.
