Niue Island, 2,400 km NE of New Zealand, is an island country of 260 sq.km. and population of 1600 Polynesians. It lies at the centre of a triangle formed by Samoa, Tonga and Cook Islands. Niue is commonly known as the Rock of Polynesia, or just 'the Rock'. English is spoken by half the population, while the common language is Niuean. The capital is Alofi, the largest of 14 villages. Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands.
