Vik - aka Vikøyri, Vikøiri - is located in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway on the Sognefjord, the longest fjord in the world. Vik is the municipality and Vikøyri is the administrative centre and village with a population of 2900. It is accessed by boat and road from Bergen and Oslo. Vikøyri has always been common land, with communal ownership for the many farms in the village, often just a small patch of land around the house. Village income came from the work on the farms, handcrafts and trade. In 1985, it was decided to preserve part of Vikøyri, with 60 buildings restored on a one acre site that today is heritage listed.

The name Vik means ‘cove’, referring to the small inlet off the fjord that is the site of Vikøyri town surrounded by mountains to 1000m. Local activities include skiing into the summer months, salmon fishing in the lakes and rivers, camping and bushwalking to the nearby Fresvik glacier. The Tourist Office is located in the central Hopstock Hotel with tour maps and information about walking trips, excursions etc. Look out for the Kristianhus Boat and Engine Collection at the tourist office.

The Hopperstad Stave Church (c. 1130) is a short walk from the port In summer this church and the Hove Church are open to visitors, and located between them is the Moahaugane, a collection of burial mounds that date back to 200–400 AD. Vangsnes, 10km north of Vik, is best known as the site of the statue of Fridtjof, the king of Ringerike and Sogn according to Fridtjof's Saga. The statue was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. It is 10.5 metres high and is situated on a 12m high platform overlooking the Sognefjord.
