This was our first time cruising, and Janelle was very helpful with choosing a cabin as I was worried about seasickness."

Sandefjord is a city of Norway, at the head of the Sandesfjordsfjord. The 10 km fjord runs N-S, and enters on the south to the Skagerrak, the strait between the SE coast of Norway, the SW coast of Sweden, and the Jutland peninsula of Denmark. It connects the North Sea with Baltic Sea. Sandefjord is about 100 km south of Oslo, the capital of Norway. The city is known for its rich Viking history, and the prosperous whaling industry that made Sandefjord the richest city in Norway. Sandefjord is a resort town, especially during the summer, with its many beaches and spas.

The Gokstad Ship, Norway's largest preserved Viking ship, was discovered during an excavation at Gokstad Mound in Sandesfjord in 1880. The original is in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, but a replica called Gaia, currently is on display at Museum’s Wharf. Constructed largely of oak, the ship was intended for warfare, trade, transport of people and cargo. It measures 23.80 m by 5.10 m., powered by 40 oarsmen or by sail. Sandefjord is also home to Europe's only museum dedicated to whaling. At Museum's Wharf go aboard the whale-catcher Southern Actor. Whaler's Monument, a Sandefjord trademark, is located at the end of the city's main street in the harbour area.

Sandefjord has a city centre, consisting of a mixture of old and modern buildings and a selection of shops. The city is one of few Art Nouveau towns in Norway. There are six protected buildings in Sandefjord: City Museum (Bymuseet), Maritime Museum (Sjøfartsmuséet), and the three farms Elverhøy-, Nordby-, and Auve farms. The city's oldest house located at Skippergaten 6 was built in 1667, is also one of the city's protected structures. Important industries in Sandefjord are information technology, chemical production, tourism, navigation, ship building and fishing.
