All my queries were answered very promptly and accurate. To top it all your very generous gift on board was used by my wife on her Birthday for a Massage. Once again thank-you, well done."

Ny-Ålesund is one of four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago in the Kingdom of Norway. It is administered by Kings Bay company, a Norwegian government enterprise. Lying within the Arctic Circle just 1255 km from the North Pole, it is the northernmost functional civilian settlement in the world, with a population varying from 35 to 180 (winter to summer). Founded as a coal mining town in 1916, it was eventually closed in 1963 as the result of a mining disaster. However, from 1964 Ny-Ålesund became an international research station, and a facility for the European Space Research Organisation.

The sun does not set from 18 April to 24 August (midnight sun). Ny-Ålesund is the archipelago's richest area for birds, especially waders. The vegetation mostly consisting of lichen. Mammals in the area include the Svalbard reindeer, the Arctic fox and the polar bear. All people in the settlement carry rifles because of the bears, and all doors in town remain unlocked. Overlooking the town to the south is the Zeppelinfjellet (556m), where the Zeppelin Observatory research station is reached by cable car. Due to the many scientific devices in town, visitors are only allowed on a marked path, a round trip of about one kilometre from the pier.

Strategically placed storyboards explain the history and purpose of the various buildings. Ny-Ålesund was the starting point of Roald Amundsen’s North Pole flight on 1926. Amundsen and Umberto Nobile's airship Norge left Ny-Ålesund and travelled via the North Pole to Alaska. This is regarded as the first successful expedition to the North Pole. The tiny museum presents the history of the Roald Amundsen Monument and the dirigible launch tower for his expedition. There’s also one shop. And, watch out for the ‘dive bombing’ Arctic terns!
