Vlissingen (old English known as Flushing) is a port and a city in the southwestern Netherlands on the former island of Walcheren. Originally a fishing hamlet in the 6th century, its strategic location between the Scheldt river and the North Sea has made it into an important harbour ever since. In the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age Vlissingen was a main harbour for ships of the Dutch East India Company. Vlissingen’s history is marked by invasion, oppression and bombardments, and during WWII Vlissingen was heavily damaged by shelling and inundation.

The city was rebuilt after the war, the seaport and industrial area developed and flourished, and now this area is the economic driving force for the region with over 50,000 ships annually from all corners of the world passing through. The city is connected by a large canal to Middelburg (7km to the north) and onwards to the Veerse Meer inland lake. An attraction for visitors is its 2.6 km long Boulevard, and the area is well served by cycle lanes. You can easily cycle along the shipping canal to Middelburg, the capital of the province of Zeeland.

Vlissingen is a lively seaside resort with beach pavilions, and sights of large ships passing close to shore. The city holds 300 monuments to which it owes its typical maritime character. A short walk from the port takes you to ‘The Arsenal’, with a Pirate Park and a Sea Aquarium with sharks. From the 65 meter high lookout tower there is a view over Vlissingen and the Westerschelde. The small Maritime muZEEum has a tower with views as far as Antwerp. There’s a large building in De Willem Ruysstraat that houses Panorama Walcheren, a huge painting of the city by volunteer artists. Walk around town. Look out for the bookshop Boekhandel 't Spui.
