Schoonhoven is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It is now the smallest municipality in the Netherlands. The city is renowned for its silver, hence it is nicknamed ‘Silver City’. Silver-smiths have been known to work here since the 17th century. Today there are a lot of silver trade possibilities and Schoonhoven is home of the Dutch Silver Museum and the International Silver School. Schoonhoven Watertower, 50m high, was built in 1901. It now houses a silver gallery and the workshops of three silversmiths. Klokkenmuseum, the Clock Museum, located in the same building as the Silver Museum, is also well worth visiting.

A beautiful example of large clockwork is the Van den Gheyn Beiaard on the medieval town hall of Schoonhoven. There are still small scale clock makers, some of whom can be visited. Other tourist attractions include the St Bartholomeus church-tower, the lower part of which is from the 15th century and the higher parts, from the 17th and 18th centuries. The nave and transcept were restored between 1925 and 1932, while Olivier van Noort - the first Dutchman who sailed around the world - was buried here. The only remaining medieval entrance gate of Schoonhoven is the Ferry Gate next to the Lek River, and is still fully functional as a water barrier.

A visit to Schoonhoven can be combined with a 14 km long (3 to 3.5 hour) and marked hike along a small river and through pasture. This hike includes the beautiful mill Bonrepas, the villages and churches of Polsbroek and Cabauw, and includes an old path used by churchgoers. There are beautiful old (and new) houses and farms along the route. The Jewish cemetery has been declared a municipal monument and is maintained by the local authorities. A plaque in memory of the Jews of Schoonhoven murdered during WWII was affixed to the wall of the cemetery in 1990.
