Haarlem is located on the river Spaame, about 20km west of Amsterdam, and 7km east of the North Sea. It is the centre of the tulip bulb-growing district and is known as 'Bloemenstad' (flower city) for this reason. Haarlem still has many of its central medieval buildings intact, and many of them are on the Dutch Heritage register. Haarlem has a rich history dating back to pre-medieval times. Its Golden Age in the 17th C saw many artists and craftsmen migrate there, such as painter Frans Hals, and at the central market square there's a statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, allegedly the inventor of the printing press.

In the 17th century's Golden Age Haarlem's linen and silk became world famous and the city flourished. In that period Haarlem's cultural life also prospered. Haarlem became a centre for brewing beer and a major trading centre for tulip bulbs. It is still surrounded by centuries-old canal towpaths. Today Haarlem is famous for being the centre of the flower-growing region of Holland, exporting flowers and bulbs, especially tulips. Haarlem is also very close to historic Leiden, the cheese markets of Alkmaar, and an hour from The Hague.

At the Grote Markt, a wide and attractive open space flanked by an appealing ensemble of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, is the garbled Stadhuis, whose turrets and towers, balconies and galleries were put together in piecemeal fashion between the fourteenth and the seventeenth centuries. The city is home to many museums, and edifices such as The Amsterdamse Poort city gate. (Harlem, a large neighborhood in the northern section of the New York City borough of Manhattan, was formerly the Dutch village of Nieuw Haarlem, on the island formerly known as Nieuw Amsterdam.)
