Groningen is a municipality and the capital city of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. Groningen is a municipality and the capital city of the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is by far the largest and most exciting city in the north of the country. With a thriving community of about 50,000 university students that imbue the city with vigour and a cosmopolitan feel, it comes as something of a surprise in the midst of the province’s quiet rural surroundings. During the academic year the arts scene is particularly vibrant with several cafes featuring live music, a few of which specialise in jazz.

The city is famous for its museums, the most famous of which is the Groninger Museum that has been transformed into one of the most modern and innovative of its kind in the Netherlands. There are also many others, such as a marine museum, an imaginative university museum, a comics museum, and even a tobacco museum. Other buildings of interest include the renovated Synagogue, the Aa-kerk - a beautiful church built in the middle ages, and several late medieval Guest Houses where visitors are welcome in the courtyards.

Virtually destroyed during the Allied liberation in 1945, Groningen is now a jumble of arts and architectures from traditional canal-side townhouses to colourful Art Deco tile work displayed along the upper facades of the shopping streets. Climb the Martini Tower to enjoy the view over the city, take a canal cruise around the historical centre. Groiningen's canal forms a moat encircling the compact city centre, making all the main sights within easy walking distance of each other.
