WOW. This was my first cruse. I will definitely have another before the end of this year, and many more in the years to come. This will be, after all the good service,(the hassle with the Army for my Certificate of Service)you people have shown,(and P&O's service),why should I go anywhere else?"

Luanda, the capital and largest city of Angola, lies on the Atlantic coast. Its Portuguese-speaking urban population of 6 million is a major port, industrial and cultural centre. After 2002, with the end of the 27-year civil war, and strong economic growth from wealth provided by increasing oil and diamond production, major reconstruction began. Its current renaissance is a truly inspiring success story. The resultant peace and stability has attracted numerous visitors. Touring the city, one finds beautiful old Portuguese architecture, such as the Cidade Alta where the presidential palace and offices are (but photography is forbidden). And for a balanced overview, drive through the poorer areas.

Stroll down Avenida 4 de Fevereiro alongside Luanda Bay, with recreational areas and small bars. Great attractions are near by: the National Bank, Luanda Port, Fortaleza museum, and underground Coins museum – Museu da Moeda. In the national park known as Agostinho Neto Cultural Centre the 120m Mausoleum of Agostinho Neto monument is visible across the city. It is one of the largest monuments to any communist leader in the world. The National Anthropology Museum is housed in a restored wealthy slave trader’s house. The National Slavery Museum is located in a beautiful colonial chapel, small yet fascinating. This museum encapsulates the history of this ex-Portuguese colony.

Of historical interest are the fortresses, in particular the Fortaleza de Sao Miguel that is the best preserved, not far from the port and overlooking the city from the south. Built in 1576, it was a major outlet for slave traffic to Brazil (1550 to 1836). Today, it holds the Museum of the Armed Forces. Take a break from the busy city and visit nearby Mussulo, a spit of land covered in coconut palms, bungalows and bars, and featuring wide sandy beaches and calm waters.
