Walvis Bay, Namibia, lies on the Atlantic coast where the desert dramatically meets the sea, and has long been a haven for sea vessels because of its natural deepwater harbour protected by the Pelican Point sand spit. This is the only harbour along the 1350km Namibian coast, hence important historically to vessels rounding the Cape of Good Hope, discovered in 1485. Variously coming under British, German and South African control, The Republic of Namibia became independent in 1990, and Walvis Bay came under its control in 1994. Agriculture, herding, tourism and the mining industry – including mining for gem diamonds, uranium, gold, silver, and base metals – form the basis of the country’s economy.

The entire Atlantic coastline meets the arid sand dunes of the Namib Desert, 100 to hundreds of kilometres wide. Walvis Bay is situated at a wide lagoon, one of the most important wetlands of southern Africa, and the hibernation area for thousands of migratory birds, innumerable sea birds, pelicans and flamingos. Visited by many are the salt fields that produce annually over 400,000 tons of salt. In town visit the local museum in the Civic Centre, the Birdlife Information Centre, and the wooden Rhenish Mission Church from the year 1880. Fishing accounts for a major part of Walvis Bay's economy.

Walvis Bay Waterfront offers eateries and views of the pelicans, cormorants and flamingos. "Dune 7" is 12km out of town, the 7th highest sand dune in the world. Whoever manages to climb it will be amazed at the view, but climb in the morning and toboggan down. Many take a cruise around the bay, take in the birdlife, while they enjoy oysters and champers. Those visitors with more time take a trip along the stunning ocean road seamed by mighty dunes to visit the neighbouring town Swakopmund 30km to the north.
