We dealt mainly with Breanna, who offered some good advice when we were booking and was very helpful with any questions we had along the way. Thank you."

Cruises visiting Kuching & all Kuching cruises for  2019

View Kuching 2019 cruises for 3 ships listing 4 cruises from Kuching with today's best deals!

The City of Kuching – Malay for ‘cat’ – is situated on the banks of the Sarawak River on the NW part of the island of Borneo, and is the capital of the East Malaysian State of Sarawak. Today’s Kuching is a delightful blend of modern buildings and old-world attraction. South of the river is the commercial residential area of the Chinese population, while north of the river are the distinctive kampong houses, predominantly Malay in style. Interestingly, the two parts have separate mayors and separate town halls. Walk down the Main Bazaar with its antique and handicraft shops.

Attractions include: the Rainforest World Music Festival (annually around July); The New Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Building with its unique design; The Astana (‘Palace’, the Governor’s residence); Kuching Cat Museum (!); and Sarawak State Museum initiated by naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace. Then there’s the Sarawak Cultural Village that is essentially a living museum. Enjoy the South Bank Promenade along the river, the Kuching South City Hall, the Entrance to Chinatown, and English-castle-style Fort Margherita (1879) that overlooks Sarawak River. Don’t miss the cat statues opposite the Kuching Holiday Inn, and the historical memorial to the (white) Rajah Charles Brooke, whose descendants ruled Sarawak until the Japanese invasion in 1941.

Kuching Wetlands National Park is located about 30 kilometres from the city. See proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques and silvered langurs. White-bellied sea eagles, mudskippers, horseshoe crabs, otters, and Irrawaddy dolphins are also present. On nearby Mount Santubong hornbills can be seen. Bako National Park is 40km by road. Semenggoh Wildlife Centre operates an orangutan orphanage and rehabilitation programme. Batu Lintang camp (5km outside Kuching) was a Japanese internment camp during WWII, and is now a teachers’ college. A few remnants of the site's former life remain.
