Seybaplaya is a fishing port, industrial and commercial centre, in the state of Campeche, Mexico. It is bordered by a still-water sandy beach over two kilometres long, with numerous mooring sites for fishing vessels and small craft. Seybaplaya is located on the western side of the Yucatán Peninsula facing the Gulf of Mexico. It is 30 km SW of the city of San Francisco de Campeche, the main attraction in the immediate area. This is a fortified historic city famous for being one of the few walled cities of America, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.

San Francisco de Campeche was founded by the Spanish conquistadores (‘conquerors’), built upon the pre-existing Maya city of Can Pech in 1540. The Spanish city walls (1686-1700) protected the city from pirates and English and Dutch buccaneers (e.g. Francis Drake, John Hawkins). Historical monuments and buildings, such as the Franciscan cathedral, old Maya ruins, the old city walls (2.65 km long) with eight bastions, and four forts attract many tourists. The Cathedral of Campeche is from the 16th century.

Outside of the city of Campeche, much of the notable architecture is found on the various former haciendas (plantations, or dwellings). Many have been turned into hotels and tourist attractions. The Edzna Maya ruins are 61 km SE from Campeche city. Here was one of the most important ceremonial centres in the pre-Classic Maya period (300-900CE). There remains a large acropolis surrounded by various temples, the most important of which is the Pyramid of the Five Floors.
