Cargados Bank (Cargados Carajos Shoals, Saint Brandon) is an Indian Ocean archipelago that lies 410 km to the NNE of Mauritius and its capital Port Louis. The archipelago includes sand banks, shoals and about 40 islets, the number varying with storm weather and sand movements. The major islands are Albatross, Raphael, Avocaré, Cocos and Île du Sud. Cargados Bank is part of the territory of Mauritius and is grouped within the Outer Islands of Mauritius. The reef is about 46 km long and five kilometres wide. At the northern end is Île Raphael, with an itinerant population of around 40 fishermen, a coast guard, and a meteorological station that tracks cyclones.

Thirteen of the outer islands have been granted permanently to the Raphael Fishing Company Ltd. The islands are rich in marine flora and fauna, but on some islands the latter have been severely affected by the presence of rats, rabbits and chickens. The islands are variously home to coconut trees, bushes and grass, coral sand, and in places guano. The reefs have much coral cover. There’s a turtle Reserve established at Île du Nord, and turtles and seabirds frequent all islets. St Brandon has been proposed for a Marine Protected Area by the World Bank, has been identified as an ‘Important Bird Area’ in Africa by BirdLife International.

The islands have been visited by Arabian, Portuguese, and Dutch sailors, and also used as a pirates’ refuge. In 1662 the East India ship Arnhem ran aground on the St Brandon rocks, and the survivors may have been the last to see living dodos. Sovereignty was held briefly by the French, and then the British until independence in 1968 and Republic in 1992. Interestingly, the islands were a base for the German raiding vessel Wolf in 1917.
